The bicycle raceway located in Edenton awarded its division champions and other competitors during the 11th annual 2006 Cycle Speedway Award's Banquet. The Reverend Thomas Biggs delivered the keynote address, urging the racers to always strive to do the best.
During the ceremony, racers remembered former Chowan County Commissioner Chairman, Wayne Goodwin. Goodwin was an advocate for Cycle Speedway and was seen at various raceway events before his untimely death in October. Riders also thanked departing Sheriff Fred Spruill who has recently retired after serving as Chowan County's top law enforcement officer for 20 years. The Sheriff was instrumental in helping Cycle Speedway over the years.

Phillips Claims Track Championship
Racers pay tribute to Former County Commissioner Chairman, Wayne Goodwin
Derrick Phillips claimed his first Cycle Speedway track championship in his second season of competition on Saturday night. Phillips became the second different cycling champion in the newly formed Kiwanis Club Midget Stock for male riders ages six to eight in its second season of existence. The division was added to the speedway lineup in 2005 and has quickly become a popular division.
Phillips, 9, earned the title after nearly a perfect season. The Chowan County rider earned every American individual win of the year en route to his first championship. It feels good, Phillips said in response to what he thought of his championship. Phillips displayed a wide smile while holding his championship trophy after the season's final race in victory lane.
Phillips and company had to anxiously wait to be declared champions as Saturday night's race came six days later than originally scheduled. Rain postponed the finale from Sunday, October 22nd to last Saturday evening. Riders embraced cool and windy conditions while maneuvering the courses in the 19th race of the 2006 season.
Cody Eaves claimed the International Individual championship following his win on Saturday. Eaves started and won in five of the 16 heats. It was a good year, Eaves said following the event in victory lane. Brandon (Weatherly) gave me a challenge this year.
Lee Persons finished 2nd to Eaves in the event after scoring 18 points. Cody Rea, Bryan Byrum and first time rider Kenneth Owens rounded out the top five finishers in Saturday's individual event.
International Pairs racing took place on Saturday with Cody Rea and Cody Eaves claiming the win. Riders were paired from a random draw for the 21-heat event. The competition was fierce with several lead changes throughout the event. In the end the two, Cody's, were triumphant. After the 21st heat Derrick Phillips and Bryan Byrum were tied with Lee Persons and Alec Eaves. After a tie breaker match, Byrum and Phillips were able to claim 2nd place with Person and Eaves finishing third.
Cody Rea and Brian Byrum earned the Chowan Hospital Partners race win. Riders paired up with one another to compete on the American track for 20-laps, alternating riders every five laps. Lee Persons and Michael Martin finished the event in second position.
I am just happy to win the event and the championship, Rea said following the event. Rea was declared the Junior Stock Champion for the second time in three years. Rea had to hold off Byrum and Ethan Berry for the championship as the three riders entered the final three races of the season within ten points of one another, making that the closest championship race of the season. The only other two time champion in 2006 included Cody Eaves as he earned the Biggs Pontiac title last year.
2006 Cycle Speedway Champions included: Track Champion and Kiwanis Club Midget Stock Champion, Derrick Phillips, Super 8 Junior Stock Champion, Cody Rea, Biggs Pontiac Pro Am Stock, Cody Eaves, Chowan Hospital Senior Women, Melissa McGowen, Leon Nixons Catering Senior Men Champion, Wayne Gilbert, Team Champions, Smith Heating & Air, Alexander Electrical Individual Champion, Cody Eaves.
Prior to the start of the event, riders and fans remembered former Chowan County Commissioner Chairman, Wayne Goodwin who passed away earlier in the week. Goodwin was a long time supporter of the speedway and many other youth programs throughout Chowan County.
Cycle Speedway will hold its 11th Annual 2006 Cycle Speedway Awards Banquet on Saturday, November 18th at Leon Nixons Catering at 7:00pm. A Silent Auction will be held during the banquet. The event will feature dinner, dance and entertainment. Tickets are available to the public for only $13. For more information, please contact the raceway office at 252-482-1655 or 252-482-8595. |
