History

Cycle Speedway History

1990 to present

Cycle Speedway has a long history dating back to 1990. Brian White founded the
American version of Cycle Speedway after attending his first stock car race in
Elizabeth City, NC at the tender age of seven. After seeing his first stock car race in person he knew
there was something he could do to make a difference in the sport of racing.

White was to young to race cars himself, so why not race bikes, almost all kids
had them. White began holding bicycle races in his familys front yard. There
were no sponsors, schedule or rulebook, only youth racing around flowerpots in
the southern Chowan County subdivision. After the racers created a big circle
in the White family front yard, Brian's mother had a thing or two to say and
soon the youth began holding races in the non-busy streets.

The future of Cycle Speedway was vastly changing in the late 90s. White grew
older and began to organize the sport. 1996 was the year Cycle Speedway first
introduced sponsors, and an official schedule. A racers points fund was
introduced based on their finish in each event. Brian White, now at the age of
13 needed help continuing the Speedway and to handle the growth of the track. 
Long time speedway member, John Turner came on board in 1996 as co-President. 
Together the two would build the unimaginable. Still in 1996, Cycle Speedway
had no place to call home. The only home for the track was the public road. In
the spring of 1997 Speedway officials wanted to get off of the road and to a
semi-permanent property

With the intentions of racing at the Cape Colony Park, Cycle Speedway officials
felt they had ended the long search for land, but after only one race at the
park, insurance problems arose. Insurance problems did no allow us to race at
the park, but we still have our options open for other areas, John Turner,
Senior Vice President of Cycle Speedway, stated in early 1997.

So after a major upset came greatness. While attending a Cape Colony
Association meeting, Cycle Speedway officials met an individual by the name of
Tim Spitler. Tim Spitler offered to let the Speedway use the one-acre property
he owned on White Oak Drive. On May 10, 1997 Cycle Speedway President & CEO
Brian White welcomed everyone to the new home of the Speedway.We are pleased
to be at our new track, and would like to thank the Spitler family for allowing
all of this to happen.

1997 brought new challenges to the Speedway. Large crowds of racers and
spectators began coming to the Speedway. Some races brought attendance crowds
of over 100. Cycle Speedway officials had to double their race day staff to
handle the crowds. During all this time 85% of the officers and staff members
were under the age of 18, and White was still only 14. Cycle Speedway is truly
built on kids and the support of their parents.We are turning many heads,
says White. I want to thank my parents Leon & Beverly White for everything,
without them I would not be standing where I am today. I would also like to
thank God for helping us though the good times and the bad times, he has seen us
though it all. There were a lot of people that said we could never do it, and
we have proven to them we could with God's help.

1998, 1999, and 2000 brought continuous changes to the speedway. Cycle
Speedway's officers have been growing older, and began to learn from their
previous year's mistakes in running a professional non-profit organization. 
Cycle Speedway began marketing all over Northeastern North Carolina reaching
sponsors form as far way as Elizabeth City, and racers from Elizabeth City, and
Williamston.

Cycle Speedway went through immense changes in 2002 as the sport became
affiliated with the larger international family. The Edenton Cycle Speedway
discovered the vast world of other Cycle Speedway raceways thanks to an e-mail
from British Cycle Speedway Chairman, Rod Witham. Witham, an England based
official made contact with the Edenton raceway via e-mail thanks to the new
Cycle Speedway website in which many of his riders and fans visited.We
recognize that the sport of cycle speedway is in its infancy in America, but we
are equally aware that the United States is a country that is synonymous with
sporting excellence and achievement, Witham stated in a press release. The
name Cycle Speedway is well known in other countries such as England, Poland,
Holland, and Australia. The Edenton raceway that was named Cycle Speedway was
purely coincidental and has led to a long-standing International relationship. 
When we named our bicycle race track Cycle Speedway we had no clue there were
other raceways out there named the same thing, White said at a press conference
in 2002. The International Cycle Speedway tracks and sport differ somewhat
from our version, however it is all bicycle racing.

The first International visit came from the then two-time world champion, Dave
Hemlsey from England. Hemsley, then 32, attended the Edenton raceway with star
rider, Rob Jones. Hemlsey and Jones became the first ambassadors to visit the
country in April 2002. The two enjoyed their trip so much they shared the news
with the others across the Cycle Speedway community and a touring party of 15
strong, made up of riders from all nations attended six months later in October,
2002. Touring parties of at least 15 strong has attended in 2003-2005 and
have included star riders from all over the world. We are extremely thankful
for International Cycle Speedway Federation Member and Tour Director, Pete
Barnes for making these tours such a success, White says.Without Pete, these
visits may have never happened.

Not only has Cycle Speedway welcomed International riders to America, but the
Edenton group has also visited other raceways throughout the world. In July,
2003 the Edenton raceway made history by becoming the first riders from America
to enter the Junior World Championships in Poland. A touring party of 15 strong
from the Edenton raceway traveled to raceways all over Europe for a two and half
week trip. The Edenton USA raceway fared well in its first World Championships
and looks forward to the next opportunity. The Edenton raceway was also excited
to visit the second raceway in America, located in Prescott Valley, AZ on Easter
weekend, 2004. David Cooke, President of the Prescott Valley Raceway welcomed
the Edenton party to his group's International extravaganza.

Other changes highlighting the Edenton raceway include the group's partnership
with the Edenton-Chowan Recreation Department under the guidance of Director,
Robbie Laughton. The partnership became official on the opening of Cycle
Speedways new raceway at the Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton in April,
2004. The speedway relocated from Cape Colony to the Airport facility and
opened two raceways, one American version (races the sport founded) and one
International track (races based off of the International sport).

Today Cycle Speedway continues to turn heads, while attracting racers,
spectators, and sponsors to enjoy the unique sport. The sport hosts 20 races
annually at its complex at the Northeastern Regional Airport and has over 40
sponsors. Cycle Speedway continues to host fund-raisers such as BBQ Dinners,
Donut Sales, etc.

Cycle Speedway is a family fun sport, something for everyone. There are no
bench setters as there are in some sports, everyone and anyone can race and yes
there are adult races some weeks too! So bring the family out for a night of
